چکیده
A number of errors have been found,-"cervical" for "cranial" (page 101) and "splenic" for "splanchnic" (page 107), as well as a few differences in interpretation of what was stated about some of the papers to which reference was made. The major criticism is that this book is largely an annotated bibliography. Many reviews of this type are being published in journals and books. This volume is not a textbook or really a reference book on the subject of hormones. The coverage is great in all chapters, although the apparent objectives of the different authors seem quite divergent, some contributing essentially a bibliography, others a critical and more interpretative review. With such a broad coverage of subject matter, the volume will probably be of greatest value in institutional libraries.

Inhibition of dihydrocozymase-oxidase activity of heart-muscle preparations and of certain cell-free bacterial preparations by 2-heptyl-4-hydroxyquinoline N-oxide.
a preliminary communication (Jackson & Lightbown, 1956) we have reported the inhibitory effect of heptyl N-oxide on the dihydrocozymaseoxidase activities of heart-muscle succinic oxidase preparations and of certain cell-free preparations of Staphylococcus aureus, Eacherichia coli, Proteus vulgariw and Bacillus pumilu&. The present paper includes a more detailed account of this work, together wi...
متن کاملThe UDP-N-acetylglucosamine-asparagine-sequon N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminyltransferase activity in preparations of rough endoplasmic reticulum from regenerating rat liver.
The UDP-N-acetylglucosamine-asparagine-sequon N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase activity in preparations of rough endoplasmic reticulum from rat liver is less than 1% of that in preparations from rabbit liver. The activity of the enzyme is increased about 20-fold in preparations from regenerating rat liver within 48h after partial hepatectomy. A smaller, but still marked, increase (8-10-fold) occ...
متن کاملSedimentation Studies of Epidermal Keratins. Keratin A and Keratin B
Electrophoretically homogeneous keratin A and keratin B were studied in the ultracentrifuge. Both preparations revealed two fractions: one which sedimented rapidly and another which sedimented slowly. This indicated that both preparations are heterogeneous with respect to particle size.
